Riana grew up in South Africa where her parents instilled in her a true love for nature, people, and respect for the environment. She grew up embracing nature and with it the desires to one day become its advocate and protector. As an environmentalist, she fought for the adoption of greener and healthier practices. Moving to the U.S. in 2002, where Chicago became her home base, Riana embarked on a mission to revolutionize the energy industry one block and one mind at a time.
Becoming an expert in renewable energy systems, Riana co-founded Windy City Wind Turbines with John Caravette in 2004. Its mission was to help consumers adopt wind technology on their buildings. In 2008, Riana and John incorporated Earth Wind And Solar Energy to include solar and other forms of sustainable energy along with wind technologies. Their mission was to make renewable energy available not just to those who can afford it, but to all.
She is an ardent believer that educating young minds is the key to saving our planet for they are tomorrow's leaders and the inheritors of the world we adults leave behind. Through education and advocacy, she is helping shape minds, young and old, to protect and respect our environment, just as she did growing up.
Riana serves on the Advisory Board of Sustainability at Wilbur Wright College in Chicago. She has a Degree in Business & Accounting and a Diploma in Marketing. Having a passion for the environment Riana has throughout her life educated herself on sustainable practices. Receiving numerous certificates in Building & Construction Management, Green Home & Garden, Green Business, Building Energy Technology, Green Architecture & Engineering, Green Design, Solar PV, Solar Thermal & Wind. This well rounded knowledge base, experience and passion allows her to apply herself as a key principal to achieve the company’s mission.
John was an innovative thinker all his life and passionate about the environment. At an early age he enjoyed taking machines apart (sometimes to the horror of his mom) to see how they worked. One of his earliest projects was his 7th Grade Science Fair project where he demonstrated how Solar PV worked and the beginning of what sparked his interest in renewable energy. Later his mechanical and innovation skills prompted him to build his own car and with that came a desire for energy efficiency.
John's experience as a Real Estate Broker taught him a lot about buildings and their mechanics and he would offer home energy audits to his clients as a way to teach them about energy efficiency. John also comes from a strong financial and business management background that adds to his well-rounded profile. However, John always knew his calling was directed towards sustainability and energy efficiency and has dedicated his life to knowing all aspects of the renewable energy industry.
His innate mechanical ability serves the company well. Taking a “hands on” approach, he's involved in the design and installation of every job, directs quality control during installation to ensure that the systems are installed correctly, to code and in working order. Every system has to pass his stamp of approval and each project is handled with great pride. John is technologically driven, a research guru and a perfectionist. Second best is not an option, every installation is a prize winning install and designed with cutting edge technology that is built to last for years to come. If it's not "John's Best" he won't put his name on it.
John has served on a number of boards including two years on the Illinois Solar Energy Association. He received a Bachelor Degree in Marketing from Roosevelt University and is a Certified Home Energy Rater. His renewable energy and sustainable qualifications are extensive, along with his experience. He holds certifications in Building Energy Technology (BET) from Wright College with honors, Building Operator Certifications (BOC I, II) Level 1 & Level 2, Solar PV, Solar Thermal, Wind with hands on training from MREA, Building & Construction Management, numerous Sustainable Practices certifications, Green Architecture, Engineering & Designing, and numerous renewable energy manufacturer training. In addition he's always learning to stay ahead of the industry.
Over the years, John has worked closely with many architects & engineers to educate them on the technology & design practices to ensure the best systems that can be integrated into projects. His passion, experience, and insight are valuable to the company and make him a key principal. He still likes to take things apart but now to the horror of his wife, Riana.
