Britton Residence: Solar and Wind Hybrid System
The Britton Residence features a state-of-the-art Solar/Wind Hybrid System that includes a 2.180kW Solar Array and the first of its kind 1kW Grid-tied Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) on a residential application in Chicago.

The 1kW UGE VAWT is anticipated to produce 2000 kwh of electricity per year assuming an average wind speed of 12 mph with the potential for 4,500 kwhs in higher wind averages. Not affected by the direction of the wind, VAWTs make good use of the wind in areas where the wind changes direction frequently and quickly and are ideal for rural, suburban and urban applications, including rooftop installations.

The Solar PV array is expected to produce a little over 210kwh a month or 2500+ kwh per year. per year. The Solar PV system has built-in online monitoring that allows the homeowner to see real time data on the energy production of the system, in addition, the ability to monitor each individual module for quick diagnostics. The cost of Britton's renewable energy systems was made affordable with the 30% state rebates and 30% Federal Tax Credits for renewable energy systems. Besides the financial benefits, these systems allow Britton to reduce her environmental impact by offsetting 18,895 pounds of carbon emissions per year. That is equivalent to burning about 974 gallons of gasoline. This hybrid system is anticipated to off-set 90-100% of annual electric usage for the homeowner, making the Britton Residence potentially a net zero home.

Braam Residence: Solar System

The Solfronk Residence have adopted Green Technology to help off-set their energy usage and lessen their carbon foot print. They recently installed solar PV system which features a state of the art 1.080kW Photovoltaic (PV) Solar array. Solar panels convert sunlight directly into electricity, which is then used to save money on their electric bill.

The Solar PV array is expected to produce 700kwh a month or 8400+ kwh per year total. This system is made up of 28 panels and features built-in online monitoring that allows the students to see real time data on the energy production of the system. In addition the ability to monitor each individual module for quick diagnostics.

This systems will allow the Solfronk residence to reduce their environmental impact by offsetting 11,743.6 pounds of carbon emissions per year that is equivalent to driving about 11,964 miles or planting 17 trees in one year.
